About Judy Taylor
Judy Taylor grew up in Whadjuk Noongar country riding a bike around Parkerville with her sister Helen, trying to catch gilgies in Jane Brook and falling in. In the 60s she was captured by the University of West Australia’s message ‘seek wisdom’. With an arts degree and diploma of social work, her first job was with the Home of Good Shepherd in Leederville, a leading edge (at the time) residential centre for girls. In her own words… ‘Interesting’. Social work is still a passion although there have been many things in between. Completing a PhD in community work on the Eyre peninsula, South Australia, living off grid, was one of them. Now she is firmly back in Bindal Country in hot, wet, sticky, or alternatively dry Townsville. Fortunately she still has a hand in, with wonderful researchers from all over, writing up important messages.
The opportunity for this writing fell into our laps. Nancy’s letters were sent back to Helen and Judy from Nancy’s pen pal, Esther when Nancy died. Nancy wrote beautifully and we were really interested in how she portrayed events in her life juxtaposed with divergent commentaries that were not available to Nancy or that she did not reflect upon.
